A Promise That Comforts The Soul

A rational human must be greatly disgusted by the multitude of horrors reported daily on the news broadcasts.  Some rulers use poison gas or biological agents to wipe out their critics.  Torture is widespread — even in our “civilized” world.  Terrorism targets the innocent in order to make a point.  No location or population seems exempt from it.  Financial woes abound.  Pensions are threatened; the value and income from savings are shaky.  Politicians seem capable of no solutions.

Civil wars, religious wars, and “ethnic cleansings” pop up on a regular basis.  Children are diseased, displaced, and starving.  Medical costs approach obscenity!  Man-induced climate catastrophies threaten us all with droughts, floods, ice storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, forest fires, water shortages, and dwindling food supplies.  Whatever is happening, it is happening on an ever-widening and constantly increasing scale.  As was stated in the prophetic word, it is not surprising that we find “Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth.”  (Luke 21:26)

Some without faith must, of course, try their best at corrective interventions.  But it is clear they are not working.

For those with sufficient faith, however, one prophetic promise alleviates all of the above concerns.  That promise is recorded by the prophet David in Psalm 76:10.  One simple verse allows us to exhale and relax if we have confidence in the promise:
“SURELY THE WRATH OF MAN
SHALL PRAISE THEE;
THE REMAINDER OF WRATH
SHALT THOU RESTRAIN.”

Imbedded in these words are soothing and instructive assurances.

The first word, “surely,” is the first confidence.  It is not “maybe” or “perhaps” or “likely.”  It is SURELY!

Then, we observe that man has WRATH.  He is angry with his neighbors, with his situation, with his possessions, with his inabilities — with just about anything he can complain about.  Consequently, he doesn’t just act, he reacts.  He comes up with “solutions,” schemes, plans, projects — anything he can think of to subdue those who he finds to be the “culprits” behind his problems.  Mankind is an angry and scheming race!  His attempts at solutions become increasing wrath rather than peace!

But we are assured by the Word of the Lord through the Psalmist that this WRATH of man is going to work good in the end.  God, Himself, is so fully in control that He has no concern for the course of man’s “wrath” in the earth.  He has, with His perfect foresight foreseen all of this and will use it ultimately to create good!  “The wrath of man shall praise thee.”  What a concept!  In our finite state, we cannot possibly see how all of this mayhem, suffering and worry can work for good.  But, in this one verse of Scripture, we are assured that it will — not only that God can handle it, but that it will actually and eventually be seen as things for which to PRAISE Him!  The fact is, God has permitted evil for our learning and ultimate benefit.

The verse then ends with the added assurance that God will not allow evil events to go too far:  “The remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.”  Clearly God is capable of knowing how much is too much.  And anything beyond that limit He will prevent.  Though it is nearly impossible for us to conceive of it, the horrors we now see will bless us and praise Him; and not a one of them will exceed the point where it can’t be beneficial.

We bring you this one verse of encouragement IF YOU HAVE THE FAITH TO RECEIVE IT, because we know that comfort is necessary and available to those who sincerely seek it.  All the world is about to be blessed as was promised in that all-encompassing promise to Abraham (Genesis 12:3).  As we await that fulfillment, we need encouragement.  This verse is encouragement.  We hope you will be strengthened by its message.

“SURELY THE WRATH OF MAN
SHALL PRAISE THEE;
THE REMAINDER OF WRATH
SHALT THOU RESTRAIN.”
Psalm 76:10 (KJV)
