Article of the Month

January 2011

It’s hard to keep a secret these days! The recent furor over revealed government classified material on the WikiLeaks internet site is only one of many incidents which confirm the fulfillment of prophecy regarding our day.

Let it be known first that our objective in this article is neither to condemn nor to applaud what is happening. We are here as observers of Biblical promises coming true. Whatever happens in the world around us is merely furthering God’s work in the establishment of His Kingdom on earth as He promised, and for which we have prayed so long.  (Matthew 6:10)

In this world it is necessary that governments, institutions, families, and individuals be able to maintain some secrecy or privacy in their operations. Thus, recklessly exposing the secrets of others for vindictive or malicious reasons is at the very best cruel, but it can also be irresponsible, dangerous, or even criminal.

What most of us see as objectionable, of course, is when secrecy is used to hide lies and nefarious schemes which have hurt or will hurt people.  It is this nefarious usage which the Bible condemns and which it promises will ricochet to the detriment of those who propagate such harmful secrecies.

― “The Leaven of the Pharisees
       Which Is Hypocrisy” ―

In Luke 12, after having strongly rebuked the Pharisees (11:37-54), Jesus gave his disciples a lesson in what will ultimately expose Pharisaical attitudes and bring down their authority. The Pharisees, remember, were the primary church-state leaders of Israel in Jesus’ day. As other prophecies suggest, they have their counterparts in the world today, and the same attitudes prevail now as did then.

Jesus began by saying, “Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.”  (Luke 12:1)  “Leaven” in Bible symbology represents sin. Jesus here delineated a specific kind of sin:  HYPOCRISY.  The word means pretending to be doing something for GOOD when what is really being done is for SELFISHNESS.  Hence, hypocrisy involves SECRETS — things which the leaders surely do not want exposed, not because of higher motives, but because of fear of exposure which would reveal true character.

Jesus continued:  “For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed, neither hid that shall not be known.”  Such a prediction would have to bring concern, if not fear, to any guilty parties who might just wonder if Jesus knew what he was talking about.  His words continue:  “Therefore, whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be PROCLAIMED UPON THE HOUSETOPS.”

The WikiLeaks have done some of this; but they are nothing new.  President Nixon learned that even discretely guarded White House secrets are not exempted.  The Biblical testimony is that the great INFORMATION EXPLOSION of our day (actually, since the late 19th Century) will enlighten earth’s population to the point where confidence in all earthly institutions will crumble.  This is preparing the way for the Kingdom of God in which only truth shall succeed.

― A “Shout” ―

Jeremiah 51 deals with Israel’s experiences with Babylon.  Babylon is long-since gone; but Revelation (14:8) indicates that it has a modern-day counterpart. The Old Testament prophecies thus have a kind of second fulfillment in our day.  The Apostles frequently made quotes from Old Testament prophecies in order to establish their new-age applications.  Thus Jeremiah 51, originally written for the Jews, is a type or picture of what we may now expect as the current troubled age is expiring.

In Jeremiah 51:12-14 we learn that God’s attack on His enemies begins by having hordes of people “lift up a SHOUT against” them.  This is what is happening in our nightly news broadcasts, newspapers, magazines, political rallies, internet sites, and in virtually every form of communication which the upset citizenry can muster.

― Secrets ―

Ephesians 5:6-13 ends with a comment so very applicable to our day.  It is not only selfish schemes which dominate many of the world’s institutions, but it is also gross immorality which has found acceptance. Thus Paul writes here:  “It is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.”  Honest, moral people cringe at what is becoming commonplace. Strangely, the guilty parties almost glow with pride as a defense when these secrets are exposed!  But the attitude of the public (even though it has come to embrace certain immoralities), yet causes the people’s confidence to wane in nearly every institution which they formerly respected.

Paul concludes:  “But all things that are discovered are made manifest by the light:  for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.”  We live in a time of increasing light. No secret is safe!

― A Culture of Lies ―

Please read Jeremiah 23:15-32.  It is again one of those passages written initially for Israel in Old Testament times.  It is, however, really for OUR TIMES.  Verse 20 says so:  “In the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.”

God’s quarrel in this passage is clear.  He says all the “prophets” (in our day we would say “wise men”) are speaking and acting after their own “imaginations” — not out of the wisdom of the ages which is reflected in the historical records of Scripture.  What is worse, He says, is that, while they do this, they CLAIM to be His spokesmen!  How do they do this, we ask?  It is so simple:  How often do we hear them refer to “Christian nations”!  God sees this as hypocrisy; and He says THEY CAN’T HIDE!  “Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him, saith the Lord.”  (verse 24)

When lies are made manifest, all that is built upon them falls. Truth is going to be a consuming fire. “Every man’s work shall be made manifest, for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.”  (I Corinthians 3:13)

― Angels of Light ―

Modern-day Pharisees exist in many fields — from government to religion.  Their hypocrisies have worked for centuries, and these people have held the general populace in a kind of deluded mental slavery.  Paul (II Corinthians 11:14, 15) identifies this deluding influence as coming from Satan — but, we find that Satan has hordes of co-conspirators:

“Satan has transformed himself into an
angel of light.  Therefore, it is no great
thing if his ministers also be transformed
as the ministers of righteousness whose
end shall be according to their works.”

These words echo what we have seen in Jeremiah 23. Leaders in all areas, knowingly or unknowingly, are co-operating in the hypocrisies which are now facing exposure.  It will be a disruptive time; but we all can be thankful that it will have a good end.

― The Binding of Satan ―

We have arrived at that grand time in history which is described in Revelation 20:1-3.  Jesus has a five-step program which will result in the total restraint of error and its institutions.  The program IS IN PROGRESS, and the indiscriminate uncovering of secrets and errors is a part of the program.  The great chain of light is laying hold of errors and age-old darknesses, and they will be bound, thrown into powerlessness, closed in, and sealed by truth so that poor, deluded humanity will no longer be deceived, but rather bask in the sunlight of truths that will set ALL men free.
