One reason that End-of-the-World predictions have failed with unfailing regularity is that THE WORLD WON’T END!  ―  at least not in the sense that doomsday prophets believe it will.  But this point never seems to get through to the prognosticators  ―  their expectations are wrong.

It was such a tragedy to see in the news the New York man who put his entire savings into promoting the end of the world on May 21st.  It was not a tragedy that he has the faith in it, but that apostate Christianity has succeeded in deceiving people into believing such unreasonable and unscriptural concepts.  The dear man still believes it will all happen later this year (and, indeed, the instigator of the teaching Harold Camping, has once more “revised” his date to October 21st.)  What is so tragic about these beliefs is what was expressed by the New Yorker.  He said he was disappointed that he hadn’t yet reaped his reward, but mostly because of his FEAR FOR THE UNSAVED WHO WILL BE LOST.

1.     The unbelievers will not be lost

       It is written, “God is the savior of all men, specially of those that believe.”

(I Timothy 4:10)  It is not God’s intent to destroy unbelievers, but to CONVERT them!  And how hard it will be not to be converted when unbelievers see the dead returning to life, the cessation of the destructive upheavals of nature, the disappearance of hunger and disease, the riddance from the world of crime, graft, inequalities, deceptions, and hatred, and the end of the dying process!  Conversion will be nearly guaranteed once “the knowledge of the LORD covers the earth as the waters cover the sea.”  (Isaiah 11:9)

2.    God’s Plan is not to destroy the earth, but to restore it to Edenic perfection.  Acts 3:19-21

       Shows clearly that the PURPOSE of Jesus’ return is “the RESTITUTION OF ALL THINGS” ― not the destruction of the planet!  It is written, “The earth abideth forever.”  (Ecclesiastes 1:4)   “The earth is my footstool” (Isaiah 66:1), and “I will make the place of my feet glorious” (Isaiah 60:13).  Jesus promised that “The meek shall inherit the earth.”  (Matthew 5:5)  What kind of promise or inheritance is it if the earth is to be destroyed?

3.    The Bible does predict an end of the world, BUT in a sense that will come as GOOD NEWS to nearly everyone — believers and unbelievers alike.  What will end is everything bad.  But the EARTH is not bad.  It is very good.  And God made it to be inhabited, not to be burned!  In Isaiah 45:18 it is written, “For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens, God, Himself, that formed the earth and made it; He hath established it; He created it not in vain; He formed it to be inhabited.  I am the LORD; and there is none else.”

When the Bible speaks of the end of the world, it is speaking of the social world, the political world, the economic world, and the pseudo-religious world.  During the First World War, President Wilson exclaimed, “The world is on fire!”  When the Bible makes the same exclamations, somehow we are incapable of understanding the symbolism.   We pray, “Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth.”  Yet, in the same head we seem not to recognize the inconsistency of that prayer with a belief that it will all come to a horrible end!

The truth is, the world has been ending for more than a century now.  The old ways of doing things are all being challenged, and the patience of the populace with our political, economic, social, and religious norms IS GROWING THIN!  The Lord will, indeed, intervene to bring about a glorious ending.  But meanwhile, He is allowing us to learn the futilities of our “world,” and to appreciate that we REALLY DO WANT IT TO COME TO AN END!  But it won’t end with a “rapture” of the faithful and a destruction of all others (who constitute nearly everyone on earth!)  It will end with a collapse of all of our flawed systems followed by a great and merciful God establishing peace and life.  As it is written in Psalm 46:8-10:

“Come, behold the works of the LORD,
what desolations He hath made in the earth.”
He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth;
He breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder;
He burneth the chariot in the fire.
BE STILL, and KNOW that I am God.
I will be exalted among the heathen [the unbelievers],
I will be exalted IN THE EARTH.”

THIS is the kind of “end of the world” we all will love!
